When your road looks like endin’
And there’s no bend in the highway a-pendin’
And you’re lookin’ but you’re not findin’
And listenin’ but not hearin’
The talkers’ mouths are movin’
But their words are not reasonin’
It’s hard to not cry it’s hard to not scream
When you prefer memories of people to people’s own scene
You needin’ somethin’ and you needin’ somethin’ real
Its itchin’ and grippin’ you and makin’ your heart wheel
Where do you go, where do you begin
You know that it's different what you're seekin’
And there's no drug or drink in the land that can stop your brain bleedin’
You need somethin’ special to get you on the track
To fire you someplace and fire you back
Your back door’s a-bangin’ and your mind’s a-janglin’
You’ve been here a million times or more and you know what’s in store
You need a national express bus to duck out the race
But still get you to your destination on time and still safe
You need a light that won’t shine in your face
You want the truth, a plain picture, a ride that
Will be rollin’ long after the project 25 craze is foldin’
And you can’t find it in the high-minded magazines that have too much to lose
You need something instead to make it known
That it's you and no one else that owns that space that you're sittin’ in
That the world ain't got you beat
You can take the heat and you can stare in the face of whatever comes down
You’ll never surrender, you’ll never retreat
That spot that you’re standin’ in ain’t for a clown
Your wiser than all of the judges aroun’
You need something special all right
You need something special to give you hope
And where do you look for this thing that ain’t phoney this thing that ain’t baloney
It ain’t on the golf course or the tennis club court
And it ain’t in a sealed tuna sandwich
And it ain't on whole foods’ window sill
And no rich kid's concert ticket won’t lead you there
And no frat boy's frat house will give you a chair
And it ain't in the facts people are tellin' you
And it ain't in the outlet malls and spin rooms people are sellin' you
And it ain't in no compound retreat
Or in any movie star's bed
And gavin newsom can't tell you and neither can your lawyer
And it ain't in bungalow 44 or french laundry
And it ain't in the starbucks or the equator
And it ain't in the facial-cold cream or the invisalign voices
That come knockin' and deliverin’ amazon choices
Onward down to the pacific you go to hear god in the waves
Upward up the mountain you go to look down upon the caves
The wonder of industrial estates, and drinkin’ and thinkin’ in shopping malls
The comfort of tail lights and the person in the window at night
Silhouettes, shadows and solitude all help but still don’t provide all the food
The only calibration that counts is how much heart we put in
The only regret we have is we don’t live boldly enough and don't love boldly enough
We are just as much a part of the world as anyone else
My protest is just the cry of a soul
So where do I gotta go to get these new eyes
It's not material possession, social connection or fleeting pleasure
The last age of reason wasn’t treason it was treasure
There are no tears of rage to get you outta this place
And oblivion can only blind you for so long
Good god almighty what can be done
Time is an ocean not a lake or a cake
Like when you look at the wake of a river’s brown-earth water runnin’
And see and feel the world and its melancholic magnificence and joy
You carry on, you stumble in the darkness and miss your way
You gotta look further and harder you say, and maybe it’s right there in plain sight
You lookin’ and lookin’ with all of your might
And where else do you look for this hope
Where else do you look for this candle that's glowin'
Where else do you look for this respect that’s a-gushin'
Where else do you look for this hope that you know is there
